Lift: Raising the Bar for Service-Learning Practice

Check out the GSN’s new multimedia tool, Lift: Raising the Bar for Service-Learning Practice!  Just launched this month, the first module focuses on the meaningful service standard through a self-navigable series of video clips and PDF documents.

Hear about how teachers, students, and community partners find or make meaning in their service-learning learning experiences. Travel from New Orleans, to Philadelphia, to St. Paul to learn from K-12 students and their adult allies about how they are impacting their communities.

Short video clips in the “Think About It; Talk About It” section are followed by questions to prompt discussion either within the GSN or onsite, among your teaching colleagues or students.  Slightly longer video vignettes collected under the “Explore Meaningful Service” heading allow you to delve deeper into each of the indicators for meaningful service.

Each module also offers a summary of the related research, documented project examples, and teacher tools to help with implementation.

We hope you’ll find utility in this new approach to encouraging high quality practice, and will help the Lift grow through your online discussion of the questions it poses.

Welcome to the Generator School Network!

Jim KielsmeierWe are delighted that you have taken the important step of helping make high-quality service-learning an experience for every student every year. We often hear that a single person can make a difference, but we know that real change requires a community. You are joining a vital group of teachers and schools devoted to changing lives and strengthening communities through service-learning.

Capitalizing on technology, we hope to help you share your stories more quickly and easily. We will be in close contact with all of you, following your progress, and in turn, working together to make service-learning a larger part of schools’ missions, curricula, and professional development.

NYLC staff will help you navigate the GSN, apprise you of professional development opportunities, and amplify your discoveries. We share in the movement’s larger commitment to helping service-learning become a way that schools meet the demands of our times, playing critical roles in improving the health of individuals and our environment while striving for greater social justice and peace.

Thank you for joining us in making this a vibrant resource. We hope to hear from you often.
